What this Facebook cover size tool does

A Facebook cover size tool takes one photo and writes a file at the pixels Meta lists for the wide image at the top of a profile or Page. That default is 851×315, an sRGB JPG that Facebook Help says loads fastest when it stays under 100 KB. The blue frame stays put. You drag the photo underneath and use Zoom so a storefront, a landscape, or a face sits in the part of the frame that still shows after the round profile picture overlaps the bottom.

The same page also switches to a Page Cover at 851×315 with the avatar in the lower center, a group cover at 1640×856, an event cover at 1920×1005, a profile picture at 320×320, a Story at 1080×1920, or a feed post at 1200×630. Open Resize Template and the list still has LinkedIn Personal Banner, Discord Server Banner, YouTube Banner, and X Banner — each card is a width and height, not a Canva file.

The picture stays in this tab. JPG, PNG, and WebP come off the preview. This is not a live check of Facebook, it does not read a Page URL, and it does not publish the cover for you.

Facebook cover size, banner size, and the overlap

Meta’s help for a Page cover — the Facebook cover size most people mean when they type the phrase — says an 851×315 sRGB JPG under 100 KB loads fastest, with a minimum of 400×150. Personal profiles use that same upload. Facebook then displays the cover around 820×312 on a computer and around 640×360 on a phone, so the file you upload and the rectangle people see are not identical. Keep names and logos toward the middle of the 851×315 frame; a phone trims the sides of the same file.

People also search facebook banner size for the same header. On Facebook that banner is the cover photo. A group cover is a different canvas: 1640×856. An event cover is commonly cropped at 1920×1005. A profile picture is a 320×320 square shown as a circle. Using the 851×315 Facebook cover size on a group or an event stretches or crops the picture. Pick the card that matches where the file will go.

After the photo is in the tab, open Size, then Resize Template. Stay on the Facebook row and scroll the cards. Cover Photo, Page Cover, group, event, profile picture, Story, and feed sizes are already in that list. Those cards change the crop ratio so you do not have to type pixels. The Facebook cover size default stays 851×315 until you pick another card.

These are the Facebook sizes already in Size. Scroll the Facebook row to pick one.

Cover controls

One photo, a Facebook cover size of 851×315 by default, a fixed frame you drag the photo in, a file you can take.

851×315 by default

The crop box opens at the Facebook cover size Meta recommends for a profile or Page header. The circle on the frame marks the profile picture so a wordmark is not hidden under the avatar.

Page, group, event, and other Facebook cards

Page Cover keeps 851×315 and moves the avatar to the lower center. Group Cover is 1640×856. Event Cover is 1920×1005. Profile picture is 320×320. Story is 1080×1920. Open Size and scroll that Facebook row. LinkedIn, Discord, YouTube Banner, and X Banner stay in the template list when the same photo has to go elsewhere.

Drag the photo and Zoom 100–300%

The frame stays still. You move the photo under it and raise Zoom to crop tighter. For a Facebook cover size of 851×315, keep faces and logos toward the middle so desktop and mobile both show them.

Download in this tab

JPG, PNG, or WebP. The preview is the file. Nothing is sent to a server before you save it. Facebook still wants a small sRGB JPG when you upload there; Image Compressor is the page if the file is still heavy.

How to crop a Facebook cover size

Three moves. The Facebook cover size crop updates as soon as you pick a size.

Adding a cafe-patio photo to the Facebook cover size crop

Add the photo

Drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP, browse for it, or paste it. A wide landscape is easier to fit into 851×315 than a tall phone selfie.

Cropping the same cafe-patio photo to 851 by 315 Facebook cover pixels

Pick a size and crop

Stay on Facebook Cover Photo for 851×315, or open Size → Resize Template, stay on Facebook, and scroll to Page Cover, group 1640×856, event 1920×1005, or another Facebook card. Drag the photo under the blue frame and use Zoom. Watch the circle on a cover photo.

Downloading the resized Facebook cover file of the same patio scene

Download the file

Save JPG or PNG. For a profile or Page, upload that 851×315 file from the cover editor on Facebook. This page does not log you into Facebook.

Why crop the Facebook cover size here

Facebook will crop and compress the file again on desktop and mobile. Seeing that crop before you upload saves a round trip in the cover editor.

You see the profile-picture overlap

The round avatar covers the lower left of a personal Facebook cover size, and the lower center of a Page cover. The circle on this crop shows that disc so a wordmark is not hidden under the photo.

Cover, group, and event sizes stay separate

851×315 is not 1640×856. A file made for a profile will squash on a group. Pick the card that matches where the file will go.

Tips and limits

This page handles the Facebook cover photo. For display names and type you might place on the cover, copy a style from a font generator.

  • On a Facebook cover size of 851×315, keep type and logos toward the center. Facebook displays that file near 820×312 on a computer and near 640×360 on a phone, so the sides of the same upload get trimmed on mobile. A short line of type reads; a paragraph does not.
  • A vertical phone photo can still fill a Facebook cover size of 851×315, but most of the top and bottom will be cropped away. A landscape source wastes less of the picture.
  • Meta says an sRGB JPG under 100 KB loads fastest for a cover, and a PNG is better when the picture has a logo or sharp type. This page writes a still JPG, PNG, or WebP. It does not cap the file at 100 KB. Image Compressor is the page if the still file is still heavy.
  • This page resizes still images to a Facebook cover size. It does not open Facebook, does not post the cover, and does not write a PSD, a Canva project, or a cover video.

Where this file gets used

Profile and Page header first. The same photo can switch to a group cover, an event cover, or another platform size from the template list.

Profile or Page cover

An 851×315 Facebook cover size for the header on a personal profile or a Page. Place the important part of that Facebook cover size away from the avatar circle here, then upload the file in Facebook’s cover editor.

Group and event covers

Switch to 1640×856 when the file is for a group, or 1920×1005 when it is for an event. Those canvases are wider than a profile cover. Do not upload an 851×315 strip as a group header.

Story, feed, and other platforms

A Story is 1080×1920. A feed post is 1200×630. A profile picture is 320×320. Open Size, stay on Facebook, and scroll those cards. LinkedIn Banner, Discord Banner, YouTube Banner, and X Banner are further down the same list. Facebook Cover Photo 851×315 stays the default.

What this page will not do

This Facebook cover size page is not Facebook. It does not log in, does not publish, and does not read your Page. You take the file and upload it there. It also does not accept a facebook.com URL or a YouTube link as input — drop a photo you already have.

It is not a generic pixel resizer for arbitrary documents. Image Resizer is the page for percentage scale and a bulk of photos. Crop Image is the page for a freeform box with no template. YouTube Banner Resizer is the page whose default is 2560×1440 channel art. LinkedIn Banner Size is the page whose default is 1584×396. Discord Banner Size is the page whose default is 960×540.

It does not export an animated GIF, PSD, SVG, or video. It does not generate AI cover art from a prompt, and it is not a Canva template picker. A photo you already have is the input.

Facebook cover size questions

What is the Facebook cover size?

Meta says a Page cover loads fastest as an 851×315 sRGB JPG under 100 KB, with a minimum of 400×150. Personal profiles use that same Facebook cover size. This page writes 851×315 by default. A group cover is 1640×856. An event cover is commonly 1920×1005.

What is the Facebook cover photo size in pixels?

851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall for the file you upload. Facebook then shows that cover near 820×312 on a desktop and near 640×360 on a phone. The download filename includes 851x315 so you can check the file before you upload it.

What is the Facebook banner size?

Facebook banner size is another name for the cover photo. Crop 851×315 for a profile or Page header. A group banner is 1640×856. An event banner is 1920×1005. Stay on Cover Photo for the default Facebook cover size, then switch cards if the file is for a group or an event.

Is 851×315 the Facebook cover size?

Yes. 851×315 is the upload Meta recommends for a profile or Page cover, and it is the default on this page. Display sizes 820×312 and 640×360 are how Facebook shows that file on a computer and a phone. You still upload the 851×315 Facebook cover size.

What is the Facebook cover size for mobile?

Facebook keeps one 851×315 file and crops it. A phone shows a shorter, wider slice around 640×360, so the left and right of the same upload get trimmed. Keep names and logos toward the center of the Facebook cover size frame here, then check the cover on a phone after you upload.

What is the Facebook cover size for desktop and mobile?

One upload, two displays. The Facebook cover size file is 851×315. Desktop display is about 820×312. Mobile display is about 640×360. Design the full 851×315 canvas and keep the important part in the middle so both views still show it.

What is the Facebook page cover size?

A Page uses the same 851×315 Facebook cover size as a personal profile. The difference is the avatar: it sits lower-left on a profile and lower-center on a Page. Switch to the Page Cover card so the circle on this Facebook cover size crop matches that layout.

What is the Facebook group cover size?

A group cover is 1640×856 pixels, a wider 1.91:1 canvas than the 851×315 profile file. Open Group Cover on the Facebook row. Uploading a profile Facebook cover size into a group stretches or crops the picture.

What is the Facebook event cover size?

Most 2026 design guides crop an event cover at 1920×1005. Meta does not print a single official event pixel size the way it does for the 851×315 Facebook cover size. Switch to Event Cover here, then confirm the editor on Facebook if that event type shows a different box.

What is the Facebook cover size ratio?

An 851×315 Facebook cover size is about 2.7:1. Desktop display is close to that. Mobile display is nearer 16:9, which is why the sides disappear on a phone. A group cover at 1640×856 is about 1.91:1. Mixing those ratios is why a profile file looks wrong on a group.

How do I convert a photo to Facebook cover size?

Drop the photo on this page, stay on Cover Photo so the Facebook cover size frame is 851×315, drag the picture until the part you want sits in the middle, then download JPG or PNG. Upload that file in Facebook’s cover editor. This page does not open Facebook for you.

Does the photo get uploaded?

No. The Facebook cover size crop runs in this tab. The picture is not sent to a server before you download the file. Close the tab and the bytes leave with it.

Is this Facebook cover size crop free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark, and no charge to crop a photo and save it. You can open another picture after the first one. Credits on this site are for the paid AI tools, not for this resize.

What file format should I use?

JPG, PNG, or WebP come off this page. Meta prefers an sRGB JPG under 100 KB for a fast Facebook cover size, and PNG when the picture has a logo or sharp type. This crop does not enforce the 100 KB cap. Open Image Compressor if the JPG is still heavy, then upload that smaller file on Facebook.

Can I type a custom size?

Yes. Open Custom and type width and height in pixels, up to 8192 on a side. The crop box follows that ratio. For Facebook itself, stay on the official cards so the file matches the Facebook cover size, group, or event slot you will use.

Can I resize for LinkedIn, Discord, YouTube, or X here too?

Yes. After the photo is open, Resize Template has LinkedIn Personal Banner, Discord Server Banner, YouTube Banner, X Banner, Instagram, and other pixel cards. The Facebook cover size 851×315 is the default. Pick the card that matches where the file will go.
